Weekly Nuggets 11-5-15

Weekly nuggets come from a brainstorm the class does together every Thursday to review the most important concepts discussed during that week in class. As you can see, we are quite busy. I’m so proud of them!

Cognitive Classes

Organization

  • One of the external realities from OFIO is uncooperative partners blocking organizational attempts.
  • When organizing it is ok to change your mind based on new information (i.e., SRL).
  • Being disorganized is not because one is lazy, sloppy, or incompetent. Instead there are other possible causes such as technical errors, external realities, and psychological obstacles.
  • There can be many obstacles when dealing with change/transition and there are a lot of possible strategies to employ.
  • Organizing should be simply and straight forward; don’t make it overly complex.
  • Information needs to go into your brain in a structured organized fashion so it is easier to recall later.
  • A psychological obstacle can be fear of success or fear failure.
  • Being in transition can disrupt your organizational system.

Note-taking

  • Condensing your notes can be very helpful.
  • Condensing your notes can be very helpful.
  • Bold and underlined words signify what the author thinks is important.
  • Review your outlines and notes before you leave the environment so it helps clarify and fill in gaps.
  • Review your outlines and notes before you need to use them again to help better prepare.

Computer Lab

  • Cyberspace is very vulnerable.
  • Domain Naming System (DNS) is the addressing system of the Internet.
  • Cyberspace is an open space and the platform is very basic made up of 1’s & 0’s.
  • Cyberspace was originally designed for communication not security.
  • The internet does not have a centralized hub, whereas the telephone system is based on a central hub.
  • The Internet is successful because it is a centralized hub and you don’t need permission to participate.

Psychosocial

  • The frontal lobe is one of the newest functions in the brain.
  • The frontal lobe has to do with executive functions.
  • Executive functions are higher level skills (e.g., decision making, divergent thinking).
  • Divergent thinking is coming up with different ideas for one question or different solutions for one problem.
  • 50% of the brain’s neuron are in the cerebellum.
