Weekly nuggets come from a brainstorm the class does together every Thursday to review the most important concepts discussed during that week in class. As you can see, we are quite busy. I’m so proud of them!
Cognitive Classes
Organization
- Discussed changes in routines related to transitions.
- Organization as a tool.
- Organization is a strategy for executive functioning skills.
- There are 3 levels of clutter: 1 technical errors, 2 external realities, 3 psychological obstacles.
Note-taking
- Cornell Notes is a note taking system that will help you be more organized and help you better learn the material.
- The Cornell Notes Basic system includes: main points, detailed notes, summary.
- Successful Cornell Note taking is an executive function.
- Students need to experiment with the CN system; for example, in class only focus on main points and then at home add to detailed notes and summarize.
- Practiced taking Cornell Notes on the PBS video – The Brain and neuroplasticity.
Goal Setting
- You must clearly define a goal and break into manageable steps.
- Steps should be sequential.
- The goal should be monitored for success or challenges as it is worked on.
Computer Lab
- Evernote includes a Web clipper feature.
- Web clipper allows one to clip Internet content into Evernote.
- Syncing in Evernote allows info to appear on all devices.
- Evernote notes can be shared.
- Stroke warning signs.
Psychosocial
- location of limbic system and what it is in charge of: emotions/memory
- The hippocampus is in charge of short term memory.
- Ted Talks – How working memory makes sense of your world.
- The hypothalamus is oldest part of brain; in charge of fight/flight, fear, anger, sex, thirst.
- Humans are fight/flight animals.
- The Amygdala is in charge of anger, rage and aggression.
- The Thalamus is the sensory relay station.
- The olfactory bulb is responsible for smell.
- We learned about the functions of the limbic system.
- Working memory is an active process.
- HAT HIPPO is an acronym for the limbic system.
